I’d love to come to your school or library to talk about my life as an author or the history in my books. For four years, I enjoyed teaching writing as an adjunct instructor at the University of Houston, Clear Lake. I have a master’s degree in Literature.
Here’s a list of my presentations:

From NASA Engineer to Novelist: As a teen (and beyond), I was conflicted about career choice. Many teens I know face the same dilemma. This talk focuses on what inspired me to pursue a career as a writer and my long journey to publication.
Writing Process: Not all novelists use the same writing process. And when writers visit with one another, we like to discuss and compare techniques, borrowing ideas to discover new ways to enhance our creativity or efficiency. This presentation is a description of my particular approach to novel-writing – including its flaws! – as well as a look at what works for others.
The Fun of Research for Historical Fiction: Using fun examples from my research for Winnie’s War, I illustrate the diverse problems a historical novelist encounters (and how unexpected some of them are!), such as obtaining an accurate count of the number of influenza deaths in a small town or figuring out the texture and size of a 1918 burlap bag.
The History in Winnie’s War: I haunted libraries, churches, and museums to better understand small town life in 1918 Texas, as well as the impact of the influenza pandemic on the people of Harris and Galveston counties. I find that kids of all ages are interested in the fascinating things I discovered. I also have a similar presentation but with a more narrow focus, A Day in the Life of Winnie, which describes the chores, meals, activities, and schooling of a girl living in 1918.
